Healthy living for people with diabetes is not just about blood glucose, you can also strive for good overall wellness and disease prevention. With diet, focus on carb counting but also help prevent heart disease and cancer by including plenty of fruit and veggies, healthy fats and less red meat. Try to increase physical activity even by small amounts, and manage stress by attending a yoga class, getting together with a good friend, or going for a walk. Don’t be afraid to seek therapy when the stress of life and having a chronic disease becomes unmanageable since stress can raise blood sugar. Make sure to get screenings such as a mammogram, colonoscopy or cardiac stress test as recommended by your physician. You have diabetes, it does not have you.
